The Westergasfabriek – from gas factory to hot spot
The Westergasfabriek is a formal industrial site that has been transformed into a thriving cultural and recreational destination. At the end of the 19th century this coal gas factory complex was built in Amsterdam. In 1967 the Westergasfabriek ceased gas production. In the next two decennia the former gas factory was used by the municipality for storage and workshop. From 1992, the buildings were used temporarily for creative and cultural activities. Adventurous entrepreneurs and artists flocked to the site. In the meanwhile a plan was made for the former factory and in 2003 the redeveloped factory and a beautiful laid out park opened for the public. Nowadays creative entrepreneurs work in the renovated historic buildings and events and festivals are held here. The Westergasfabriek is regarded as a model for redevelopment, far beyond the Dutch borders.
